Student-Centred Learning: What’s The Point?

Students across the world famously think of school as dull and boring. But does it really have to be this way? Is it even possible to place the learner as the core of education?

It goes without saying that people engage with things that they care about more than things they have zero interest in. Students are no different. Their ability to succeed increases exponentially when they are learning about something that matters to them.

As opposed to teacher-centred learning, student-centred learning tailors their education around their interests and connects their studies to their real-life experiences and passions.

What are the benefits?

  • Engaging and motivating

Student-centred learning gives your child more ownership over their learning journey and so they become much more invested and engaged in their studies.

  • Tailored and flexible

Every student is unique and learns differently. A student-centred approach caters for the needs and learning style of an individual.

  • Encourages critical thinking

A student-centred approach encourages students to think critically and ask questions, leading to deeper learning and a better understanding of the material.

  • Develops problem-solving skills

Students are encouraged to take more responsibility for their own learning and to find solutions to the problems presented to them, allowing them to be more prepared for future challenges.

  • Promotes independence

By tailoring their education in a way that connects their studies to their real life experiences and interests, students are empowered to become self- directed learners that are able to take control of their own education.

While the benefits of student-centred learning are clear, they are often not feasible or practical in schools that have 30 or more students in a class, all with different interests and strengths and weaknesses. However, with after-school tutoring, there is an opportunity for students to be able to learn in a way that works for them.
