Can Maths Really Be Fun?

Ask any student in the UK what their least favourite subject is at school and 9 times out of 10 they will say maths. It often doesn’t seem to relate at all to real life and can feel a million worlds away from the everyday problems students of today face.

It doesn’t help that maths has a notorious reputation of being difficult and uncool. Disliking maths is practically a basic value amongst many young people. Adults often unthinkingly indoctrinate this belief further by being surprised when a child does express their enjoyment of the subject and will often confess that they have always been “rubbish” at maths.

With these preconceptions and the black and white nature of maths, it is easy for a student to develop a paralysing fear of maths; otherwise known as “maths anxiety”. This creates a complete lack of confidence in the subject, preventing students from contributing and engaging in a lesson.

So how is your child expected to learn something they can’t connect with?

Making maths fun and personal reduces maths anxiety.

By using games and puzzles crafted specifically for them, students enjoy and engage with maths activities. When what they have learnt in maths class starts to apply to real life, it’s empowering for students to be able to use this.

In large classes of 30 students, all with different strengths and weaknesses, it is impossible for all their individual needs to be met. It becomes easy for students to be left behind when they become stuck on a concept. Suddenly they lose complete confidence in their maths abilities and are unable to progress. By tailoring lessons to a child’s unique needs and interests, maths tutors reignite a student’s enthusiasm for learning and boost their confidence.

By making maths fun and personal, students find it much easier to learn and remember new and challenging concepts. Maths runs through everyone’s day-to-day lives; we truly can’t function without it. Once students connect what they have been learning with everyday problems, the concepts they have been learning are reinforced and allow them to have more academic and personal successes.
